Back to School

Well... hopefully, you can teach an old dog new tricks. I'm back in school for the first time in awhile, taking Java at the local community college in the form of a night class.
I compiled my first little java application the other day -- it says "Hello World." Now, that's some pretty good stuff.
It's actually kinda neat being back in school. Dealing with the beaurocracy of anything in Philly is kind of a pain in the butt -- it took me an entire day last week to track down the new head of the department, convince him that I had completed the minimal requirements of a basic programming class, and get actually signed up and registered. (Actually, convincing him only took about 2 seconds -- he said, "You wanna take this class? Cool." I think they just needed people to fill it up a bit.)
Anyway, so far it's been a bit slow... but now we have textbooks (finally), so it should pick up a bit.
... and then I'll be programming java like a mad fiend. 'Course, this has the added bonus of getting me out of the house on a regular basis. The downside of that is that it's UNBELIEVABLY FRIGGIN' COLD OUT THERE. I mean, I left class last night around 10:00 pm, and it was like -10 degrees (F) with windchill.
That's just uncalled for. I guess it's good stay-inside-and-learn-java weather, though.
At any rate, anyone got a good java book to recommend as a reference? Any other tips for beginners?
P.S. Do they accept Student IDs at IKEA, because, well, that would be Roig-Heaven. Apparently.

Well, the good news is that with a student ID again, you should be able to run around Philly with a much lighter wallet. The bad news is, no, you can't teach an old dog new tricks... take it from one older dog. Once you get past 25 years old... its all over. :-)
